March 2010 Security Corner Newsletter
By Janet Wise - Security Director

REDBOOK: Whether you are new to Lake Summerset or have been here for a while, please take the time to read the Lake Summerset Association Rules and Regulations REDBOOK. Security enforces the rules that are in this book. If you do not have a Redbook, they are available at the LSA Office or the Main Gate

LITTERING: The Security Department has received complaints that the ice fishermen are leaving trash on the lake. If you are caught littering on the lake you could receive a citation with a fine up to 200 dollars.

MEMBERSHIP CARDS: The LSA Office issues membership cards to each household that is current in dues. These cards should be carried by all members just as you would a driver’s license. Remember, not all guards will recognize you as a member just by looking at you.

There are many times when a Junior member will get a ride home and not have their membership card or any identification with them. A lot of guards never see Junior members on a regular basis, so they cannot recognize them when they just say I live at a particular lot. When they are not recognized or show ID, then that person will be treated as a guest. That is the main reason why Junior members should carry their LSA membership at all times. If you do not have your children listed as Junior members, then we must consider them as guests, and they will not be allowed access to LSA until they get a pass from a member.

GUESTS OF GUESTS: When your guest(s) arrive at the guardhouse, the gate guard will check that there is a pass left for them. The security gate guards are seeing many instances in which guests are bringing guests with them; therefore, there are no passes from the member to admit the guest’s guest. This seems to irritate the guests you did invite, because they believe they can invite their own guests. To avoid delays, please, make sure that you advise your guests that if they want to bring someone with they must have you leave a pass for their guests also.

TORNADO AWARENESS/PREPAREDNESS: In this months security corner I am addressing Tornado Preparedness. With this years harsh weather patterns that are occurring, March could be very unpredictable.
Do you know the difference between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning?

The National Weather Services issues a Tornado Watch when tornados are possible in your area, when the conditions to produce a tornado are favorable. A tornado warning is issued when a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar in your area.

Tornado season is generally March through August, though tornadoes can occur at any time of year.

When a tornado is coming, you have a short amount of time to seek shelter.

If you are home, seek shelter in a basement, storm cellar or lowest level of your home. If you have no basement, go to an inner hallway, small room preferably without windows. Go to the center of the room and if possible get under a heavy piece of furniture.

If you are outside, seek shelter in a building. If this is not possible lie in a ditch or low-lying area. Be sure to cover your head and neck and watch out for flying debris.

If you are in a car, get out of the vehicle immediately and take shelter in a building, ditch or any low-lying area. DO NOT try to out run a tornado.

If you are on the lake in a boat, reduce speed, put on life jackets and head for the nearest shore. If you are not able to get to shore, have all persons in boat lie on the floor in the center of boat, and anchor it. If you do get to shore seek shelter immediately.

To prepare for a tornado emergency you should have regular drills with your family. Make sure all members of your family know where the designated safe area is in your home. Have disaster supplies on hand (refer to Family Safety Plan in this months issue).

You may have noticed that Winnebago County has installed numerous sirens along our roads. These sirens, will sound when there is severe weather in our area The County tests the sirens on the first Tuesday of every month.

ROAD POSTINGS: Usually, sometime in March or April, the County Highway Department will post roads. The county posts roads because the thawing makes the roads vulnerable to heavy loads causing road damage. This means that certain trucks are not allowed to travel on the posted roads. If a truck of questionable weight is allowed, they must have a weigh slip that states what size load they have. These weigh slips must be shown to the guard at the entrance to Lake Summerset. If they are under the posted weight limit, they will be allowed to enter. Since the main entrance is in Winnebago County, LSA complies with the Winnebago County Postings. The county has weight signs posted at each end of Best Road and other areas. If you are having a delivery, such as lumber, concrete, furniture, etc. make sure that your driver of these deliveries knows that we comply with the Winnebago County road postings. To know when the roads are posted you can call the Winnebago Highway Department or check the signs. The following is the gross weight for vehicles:

  • 2 axles, single rear tires 7,000 lbs
  • 2 axles, dual rear tires 18,000lbs
  • 3 or more axles, dual rear tires 30,000lbs
  • GROSS AXLE LOAD 11,000lbs

If you have any questions concerning any subject in this article, feel free to call the security department at 248-2194 extension 224 and ask for Janet.

The security guard house is open 7 days a week 24 hours a day to report any complaints or suspicious activity. The emergency number is 248-2778.
